Even though I'm no fashion expert, (I'm more the jeans & sweatshirt type here on the farm!), I've had a blast listing these fashion ads from 1961...which lands right in the middle of the "Mad Men" era! The artwork, illustrations and photography are amazing and the vintage fashions are fascinating. The 60's, like so many other decades & eras, definitely had its own distinct look!

55 Days and Counting...
Wow, can it really be that we're already into November?? As so many years have recently, 2011 is flying by faster than I can comprehend...and it's already time to think about the holidays! I even heard Christmas music at Walmart yesterday (Halloween). Oh my.
So, like me, I'm sure that many of you are always searching for unique gifts...the ones that really stand out, the ones that you love giving as much as they love getting. How about a (sort of) DIY gift this year?
One of the most fun things I've discovered this year is vintage magazine advertising - you know, those "great old ads" with perky, dolled-up housewives gushing over a new fridge or Hoover and the health benefits of Kellogg's All-Bran...filling stations with attendants in white...beautiful big old cars that you could fit a fully-suited pro football team into...they're too much fun, many featuring great artwork, photos & illustrations. They also represent our cultural and social history, in the way that product manufacturing & advertising changed with the events of the day, such as the beginning (and the duration) of World War II.

Back to the gift ideas :) Place any of these ads into a frame and you've got an instant, unique gift for them to hang on the wall...it couldn't be any easier.
Does the giftee collect perfume bottles?
How about something for movie buffs...to decorate the movie room:
Cars!
Fun Kitchen Decor:
Music Memorabilia
Paris Restaurant Menus:
...and just about any other thing you can think of!

This is an amazing reading nook!! I need one!
Long Form Library by ifsodoso on Etsy: "This is a remarkable piece of furniture. The concept was to design an environment in which to read and contemplate."
Although the shade of a tree, a sunny beach or the hammock swing on my porch will do :)
O for a Booke and a shdie nooke, eyther in-a-doore or out;
With the grene leaves whisp'ring overhede, or the Streete cryes all about.
Where I maie Reade all at my ease, both of the Newe and Olde;
For a jollie goode Booke whereon to looke is better to me than Golde.

Book Thought of the Day
"I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book." ~Groucho Marx
Husband & I finally broke our ties with TV a few months ago...we shut down our Dish Network and now have no television whatsoever, not even local channels. Even though neither one of us watched it much to start with, we were reluctant to cancel the service since there was always the possibility of "a great program on the History Channel" or an "amazing concert being shown on OPB" or some breaking news ... shows we surely wouldn't want to miss!! Funny thing is, those shows came along so rarely that the TV was never on except to watch a movie on DVD.
We get along just fine without access to 700 channels 24/7. All the news we could ever use is available on the Internet, whenever we want or need it. We do enjoy movies, and many of the shows from HBO & Showtime, so we order those from Netflix and watch them a couple of evenings a week.
We may need to re-think our strategy when World Cup Soccer comes along...but for now the TV is off. Sounds like a good time to read a book! :)
